Free or Cheap Ways to Make Employees Happy!

As a small business owner I've had to find creative ways to retain and motivate employees since I don't have fat payroll and benefit budgets!

Studies have shown job satisfaction isn't about pay rates and vacations. Here are some free and cheap ways to do a little more for your employees to make them go a long way for you!

- Say THANKS! Yeah, we know you pay them to be there, but everyone wants a pat on the back! It's free, too!!!

- Personalize a message! Maybe a card on their birthday or a note on each pay stub... Find some way of noticing what they contribute and acknowledge it!

- Clear your mind when you greet them each day! We are all busy, but clear your mind for a genuine "Good morning!" and look them in the eye and smile. Seriously. And...it's free!!!

- Find ways of offering extra benefits. We give each employee a small monthly stipend toward supplemental health benefits. Our costs stay the same and they get an extra boost when they need it!

- Communicate!!! Trite? Maybe, but key! Meet a couple times a year to give feedback and hear from them their successes and struggles. You will always come away better informed and they feel heard!

Being a good boss doesn't have to cost you!

Magnet Signs ... Attractive? Pros and Cons!

We have clients looking for temporary or permanent solutions for their vehicle advertising and identification and magnets are often the first product they ask about.

Magnets are a wonderful product, but we are careful to take time to understand the use of the magnets to ensure its a smart purchase. Magnets are NOT perfect in every situation.

We thought we would share some "pros and cons" for magnet buyers!

PROS
- Affordable - less than $100 for a pair of professionally made magnets for your car doors!
- Flexible - readily removable and can be moved from vehicle to vehicle with no problem.
- Temporary - great if you need a message that is short term and easy to remove
- Safe - mostly! You have to be prudent with use of the magnets, but if you follow normal care instructions, your car will be unscathed!
- Attractive - you can design a full color magnet with product photos and full color logos!
- Effective - you get 'views' everytime to leave your driveway!

CONS
- Vulnerable! They can be stolen with no effort at all, or can even fly off while driving. They are a heavy material, and if all corners are not carefully placed, contacting the surface of the car or truck, a breezy drive will pull them off and they'll be lost for good!
- Temporary - yes, it is nice to be able to take them off, but if you are promoting a business that is built on the idea of reliability or longevity, you might rethink a "temporary looking" sign.
- Limited - they can't be as large as you want -- too much magnet is just TOO heavy after a certain point. We don't like to go larger than 24" in any direction -- more than once large magnets have left our store on the side of a truck, never to be seen again, disappearing on the drive home!
- Hard to Store - magnets can be stored easily on a large, flat surface, like a refrigerator. Not many of us have refrigerators we are prepared to have covered with large magnets.

Your Own Worst Enemy! Selecting Colors for Your Sign

Color choice is often a misunderstood element in creating an effective, legible sign. Some approach color as if it must rigidly follow their existing color palette of their brand, and others abandon any consistency and simply want to generate the highest level of contrast, without regard to aesthetics. In many cases effective color choice is a balancing act between BRAND AESTHETICS and LEGIBILITY. Too far in either direction will result in an ineffective sign.

In most cases, legibility is priority for signage, particularly for the primary identifying sign for a business. If your clients can't find or read your sign, you've failed to serve them. If your business "brand" colors are tan on white, using those colors for your primary identifier is dangerous. Higher contrast, even if you are abandoning your sublte, well-developed brand, is critical.

However, too far toward the attitude of "red and white and bigger is better" will result in a kind of "screaming sign" that results in the opposite effect of becoming background noise to the human eye. Or, if too "bold and brash" it can have the effect of giving off the wrong image. Selling high end jewelry or imported spices? Using imbalanced or clumsy lettering will not attract the right clients.

On the other hand, if you are having a going out of business sale, big and clumsy might be just what the sign doctor ordered!

Before you leap blindly into the direction of "bigger and brighter" or "sophisticated and subtle", let your sign expert help guide your choice.

MORE Secrets to Handling Unhappy Customers...

Ready to get your unhappy customer back on your side, and seeing eye-to-eye?

So, if you've followed our first secrets, you should have your customer at a point where they have felt thoroughly "heard" -- they maybe have relaxed a little, you've taken good notes about their viewpoint and are ready to move to the "solution" stage!

Now, it is important for you to stay calm and not take anything the customer has said too personally. Yes, they might be saying unreasonable things or accusing you or your employees of high crimes, but if you become defensive now, all your time will be wasted and you'll end up back at the start. So, stay impartial!!

It even helps relax them further by showing some sympathy for their situation. You might try "I'm sorry that your experience has been (insert THEIR word here...frustrating, long, ridiculous)" or "I'm sorry you felt our service was (terrible, stinky, the worst ever)." It's important you are sincere, and it is important that you recognizing you are simply apologizing for their experience. You haven't agreed to anything except that you are sorry that they had such a bad experience, even if it was their fault...

You may feel compelled to share "your side" of the argument -- and that's normal. But don't. Not yet. First, let's finish letting the customer take us down their path and gather ALL the info you need. You have to put your ego aside and know that this isn't about YOU... it's about THEM!

Okay, so the next step is to find out what the customer really WANTS. So ask them! Just say "Tell me what you think is fair." Just that simple -- straightforward and to the point.

Likely, they will tell you...
"I want a refund" or maybe "I want you to give me a free lunch" or sometimes, if they have truly gotten everything off their chest and you have done a great job of being sympathetic and listening, they might just say "I don't want anything but an apology."

So now that they have told you want they think is "fair", you have several choices:

- If it is easy to do, just say "Sure, we can give you a free candy bar!" and be done with it.

- If it is a difficult request and you need to weigh facts, then I would say "Great - let me gather more information from my staff about what you have shared with me -- it's only fair to let them respond -- and I'll get back to you about your request."

- If the request feels out of the question, you may need to help the client see your side of things. This means gather all the facts and data you need, and then get back to the client and share your side of things.

How to share without angering your client? Remember to keep their perspective in mind -- show empathy for the reality of their experience. As you walk them through your version of events, your empathy will likely help them with THEIR empathy.

Let me illustrate using an example of a client who didn't read the proof you provided for the nametags you printed:
"Well, Mr. Jones, I understand how frustrated you must have been getting your nametag with the name Miss Jones rather than Mr. Jones. That seems like an obvious thing, doesn't it! Let me tell you about how our processes work... We take your infomation and give it to a designer, who has never met you. This designer has no idea if you are a man or woman! When the designer lays out artwork into a proof, we send the proof to our customers to they have a chance to double check EVERYTHING... the spelling, colors, and design. From there, we count on our clients to check every and all details. We can't possibly be responsible for approving all the layouts -- there are too many and we can't know if we are always right or wrong!"

Once you've had a chance to explain your perspective, most clients will begin to see your side of things -- and maybe want to argue a point or two. Listen carefully -- sometimes the client is right, even when we don't like them!!

Next, its your turn to offer what you CAN do. Maybe nothing... maybe exactly what they want. But maybe a compromise!!

Maybe like this?

"I tell you what, Mr. Jones, I can see you're unhappy and we don't want to lose your business or have you leave with a bad experience. How about if we reprint it for you -- and you promise to review the proof this time -- and we'll give you 50% off your NEXT order?"

Chances are good, if the client is reasonable, if you have let them get their feelings off their chest, if you are open to learning something new, and you are eager to keep your customer.... a resolution will be found!

Does this process always work? No, not always.
Are some customers impossible to please? Yes, but rarely.

Also, this technique takes practice. I've been dealing with customers for years, and there are still times that I can find myself getting emotional and wanting to fight with my client, rather than resolve the problem.

Secrets to Handling Unhappy Customers

I had some hard-core boot-camp style training in upset customer handling techniques when I worked in a car dealership.

Let's face it -- almost VERY FEW are happy to walk into a car dealership! If you are buying a car, you might be stressed about the process of negotiation. If you are having a car serviced, you are NEVER happy to be there -- it's either expensive, or inconvenient, or both.

So, as service manager, and then as sales manager, I had to learn how to think on my feet and work quickly to get the customer back to their "happy place"!!

While I'm no where near perfect.. sometimes I still mishandle complaints, here are some tips I was taught that I suggest you try!

- Let the customer get EVERYTHING off their chest. Don't interrupt, don't argue their position, don't shake your head no when you disagree!! Just listen!!

- Write everything down! This will help you listen -- write down what they are telling you in quick notes for reference, and be sure to write down any "emotional" words they use -- "frustrated" "stupid" "inconsiderate" -- you want to write them down to ensure you are UNDERSTANDING what they are saying about their experience. Plus, writing it down lets you focus on the NEXT thing they say, knowing you can come back to any item to discuss further or share your side.

- Acknowledge what they are saying. "I'm sorry you are so frustrated by our online buying process" or "I'm sorry you felt ignored by our sales staff." Just because you are accepting what they are saying, doesn't mean you've AGREED... you are just allowing them to vent and letting them know you HEAR them.

If you do these steps well enough, chances are good the client will be calming down and able to move to the next step. If you interrupt them, you will anger them further or prevent them from being fully heard!!

After you've been sure to hear them out -- even repeating back to them what you heard can be helpful to ensure you are clear -- next step is to focus on the SOLUTION!

5 Sins of Bad Logos!

I see a lot of logos in my business. Most of them are great -- easy to read, elegant, simple, clever. But we see a few bad logos, too -- messy, complex, ugly, confusing and on and on.

Even a good logo can be made bad by mishandling them.

Here are 5 of the most common "sins" we see around logos and how they are managed....

1. UNPROFESSIONAL DESIGN! Often people bring us logos that their daughter, nephew or hair dresser made in their spare time in Photoshop, or worse, Word. Now, for many endeavors a polished, professional logo isn't necessary. Starting a kickball team? Let your daughter make the logo! Starting a business from which you hope to make a living? Hire professional help!! Have a solid, well designed logo will be an investment, but one that will pay you back for years to come.

2. WEAK MANAGEMENT! If you have a logo, be true to it! Would our beloved American flag have the same power if occasionnally there were 46 stars and checkers instead of stripes? When you have it made, ask for several file formats so you can whatever is needed to whoever needs it. The print firm making your business cards needs one logo. The website developer might need another. And trust me, your sign company needs something else entirely!! Have several formats available so folks don't have to rebuild it, and possibly create a slightly different version.

3. OVERUSE or UNDERUSE! I've seen clients stick their logo EVERYWHERE! On the other hand, some never use it to brand anything. Your logo is your MARK, like a signature for your business. It should be used where relevant to help promote and protect your product, whether that's YOU, your writing, or a can of peas. Use your logo with an eye toward reinforcing what your product is about, but resist the urge to put it on every wall and surface, which weakens it.

4. CHANGING IT! Have you seen the early McDonald's arches? They aren't much different from today's version! Nearly every logo undergoes 'tweaks' and updates, but resist the urge to drop your logo when you are bored with it. You may be bored with it, but its like a good spouse... sometimes boring, but mostly reliable and recognized. You can lose the value of a brand you have built up if you simply dump a long time logo altogether and try to introduce something all new.

5. NOT HAVING ONE!! We've had to create logos out of thin air for clients who don't have one, even though they've been in business for years. Not that we mind -- we are happy to do it! However, we want to encourage every business owner out there tempted to stick a "clip art" pyramid onto your businss card... GET A LOGO! Success in a business relies on having a unique and memorable message in the marketplace. Clip art is neither!

Cheapskate's Guide to Getting Noticed!

Let's be honest -- most businesses these days are looking for cheap or FREE ways to get noticed as marketing budgets shrink and customers are harder to come by. Sometimes the solution isn't going bigger and louder, but going cheaper and smarter! Embrace your inner Cheapskate!!

Here are some thought starters to get your juices going on CHEAP marketing!!!

- Did someone send you a customer? You better let them know you noticed!! A hand written card and $5 gift card is appreciated, but what about a heartfelt phone call with an explanation why it was the PERFECT referral and could you please have another?

- Door to Door! Sounds crazy? Maybe -- but visiting your "neighbors" in the building or around the area just to say hello and introduce yourself is a FREE way to let folks know what you do... and you to find out what THEY do! (Don't forget to leave your business card!!)

- Can't afford a vehicle wrap but want that kind of impact? Sit down with photocopies of a photo of your car or truck, grab a sharpie and someone creative to brainstorm with, and sketch up 50 ideas for how to put a graphic on your car that can't be missed. Maybe your logo placed upside down? Maybe just your website name down the side in 24" letters? How about a favorite customer testimonial? Don't do "normal" with logos on each door -- SNOOZER!! Go for something that will strike up conversation, get noticed and steal some eyeballs out there!

- Donut Day! Once a week pick 3 customers and drive to their business with a dozen donuts, delivering them yourself and thanking them for their business. Not only will your customer remember you for it, but their STAFF will be thinking about you and your business, too! You never know where a good referral can come from!

- Find Partners! There are other small business owners like you trying to find customers and many of those small businesses are in related or similar industries. In other words, THEIR client base might look a lot like YOUR client base! Sharing of introductions and leads helps both of you grow your business.

So don't despair -- you don't have to blow your budget this year -- you can STILL be a cheapskate and get noticed, too!

What Do I Include on My New Sign?

The process of selecting and buying a sign is filled with lots and lots of decisions to be made --
- How big?
- Where on building?
- What materials?

Much of this gets decided in the budget process, or even by city permit regulations related to sizing and placement.

For many customers the hardest decision is to know exactly WHAT to put on the sign! They see the investment and want to maximize the "bang for the buck" and put the right info on there.

MORE IS BETTER? Sometimes, but generally not in signs! Keeping it simple is better -- your business name must be primary! Much more than that is tricky. You want to balance getting GOOD info on the sign that is useful, vs. cluttering it up so much it is ignored altogether!

LOGO IMPORTANT? Certainly, your logo is important to your brand, but if your logo or mark is complex, full of details, multi-part, or not really related to your business, then leave it off and let your name do the job. Unless your logo is clean, easy to read, and an integral part of your name, then I would drop it and let your business name, and maybe product, stand on its own!

WEBSITE? I never advise my clients to put a website on their PRIMARY sign, as the clients are right there, about to turn into your parking lot! No need for a website to attract them. Other signs, like your window lettering or vehicle graphics would be a great place to feature your website.

ADDRESS? I would also not include your address if you can exclude it. Your clients are probably looking for your BUSINESS name, and not the address. If it works, put your address on your building -- that's where it belongs!

PHONE NUMBER? You might consider a phone number if you are a kind of business that requires or encourages clients to make appointments, or even is a business that delivers your product. If you generally have a lot of walk-in business, then don't include it. If you feel strongly, it isnt' a bad thing to have there, but only if you have plenty of room for something "extra".

If your tendency is to do "MORE" and you are having a hard time editing yourself, think about the biggest brands in the world -- even though they are the best known brands, they still keep their signs SIMPLE and CLEAN to make the business easy to find. Best Buy, McDonalds, Dunkin Donuts... they all let their name speak for themselves and focus on high contrast, easy to read graphics.

Build Business with Your Secret Audition -- Are You Ready?

Recently I got a phone call from a total stranger who was looking to do business with me. When I asked him where he heard about us (which I try to do always!) he revealed he was referred by a "friend". The name of this golden referral source wasn't ringing a bell, so I probed for more information, hoping I might figure out who this mysterious person was, so I could send a thank you note.

His answers led me to remember a conversation I had with a total stranger at a recent social gathering. We talked sort of in general about life, work, kids, family, hobbies -- just getting-to-know you kind of conversation. We talked a little business, but not deeply enough for me to even think about soliciting business!! Very pleasant and memorable for me, but not a deep, intense connection, if you know what I mean.

Well, because of this pleasant chatty conversation I had with a stranger, I now have a relatively large account with this new client that I hope will produce ongoing business for years to come!

It was a great reminder to be sociable, pleasant to talk to, genuinely interested in others and leaving a good impression, above all! Not only does it feel good and make life happier, but it can be good for business!!

There are times we don't even know it, but we are secretely being "auditioned" for future business -- remember that next time you find yourself at a cocktail party, in an elevator, or other daily congregation of people!

Keep that smile on your face, have some interesting open ended questions to share, and leave every audition successfully!

Sign Permit Pitfalls for Business and Property Owners!

I hear a LOT of opinions about city regulations and permitting laws for signage. I get ear-fuls from city officials, from business owners, from landlords, and from other sign companies!

The opinions range from outrage that a city would have the ability to restrict signage to outrage that business owners can ruin the cityscape with visual sign "garbage."

Whatever your opinion, if you are starting a business, moving a business, or buying a property, KNOW YOUR SIGN REGULATIONS in advance!!

I've had business owner clients almost brought to tears when they discover during our sign permit process they have just signed up for a 15 year mortgage on a business property where they can't put up an appropriate sign to promote their business.

So what to remember?

- Create your buisness plan with budget

Top 5 Things My Sign Buying Customer Should Know!

As a sign company owner, I get a chance to work on projects of every imaginable type, from a simple bathroom sign in an office to a complex way finding design package for a retail campus.

I've learned after some years in this business that if a customer comes with some BASIC ideas already in place, it will speed the process of pricing, design and fabrication.

Here are 5 basic "rules" that can help anyone looking to buy a sign make the process faster, easier and more affordable, too!

1. Be Prepared! When you shop for a car you probably have at least SOME idea of what you want -- convertible vs. pick up, luxury vs. economy. It's the same in the sign business. Maybe you don't know the NAME of what you want, but snap some pics or notice the types of signs you are thinking about so you can come prepared to say "THIS is what I want!"

2. Establish Budget - When you come in the door know that we offer products of every possible budget range -- from a $50 paper banner to a $50,000 channel letter set. While we are interested in selling you a very nice sign with a healthy budget, we are more interested in being sure you are getting the most value for your budget. We try to help our clients establish a budget by discussing budget ranges for a project, but it would help speed things along if BEFORE we quoted reverse lit channel letters of polished stainless steel that you have only $2000 to spend. Be upfront about what you want to spend and let us figure out the perfect budget solution!

3. Don't Assume You Can't Negotiate! I probably should not tell you this, but for most larger projects sign companies can negotiate on price to secure a project. While I'm not interested in being the 'cheapest sign company in town', if given a chance on a nice size project, I probably will be willing to nip and tuck if the business is promised to be mine. I also might find a more affordable option if you tell me that I'm on the wrong track. Because our work is all custom, you could get 3 different quotes from 3 different shops, and they might be all different product! Be sure you are comparing apples to apples, and then ask your favorite store if they might be able to sharpen their pencil to save you some dollars!

4. Cheapest Isn't Always Best - While I'm happy to get you an aggressive price, be aware that getting the cheapest product isn't always in your best interest! Remember that in some cases SERVICE and QUALITY make a difference in the long run. Monument Sign - In Progress!

When we build a monument sign for a client one of the most popular styles is a 'stacked stone' appearance. These are popular because they are long-lasting, rich looking, project a history, and a kind of hearth-stone-warmth.

For a local apartment complex and neighborhood we are in mid-construction of a block and engineered stone sheathed structure -- a stone monument sign base! This complex wanted to convey a kind of right-at-home feel, and establish themselves in the neighborhood more clearly.

The least expensive way to achieve this "look" is a carved high-density foam sign. That style of sign is affordable, fast and attractive, but isn't built for the long-haul and can show weather more readily that engineered stone.

So we build the structure from block, placing the blocks carefully on a poured concrete footer, or underground block. Cinderblocks are stacked and mortared together, and then, in this case, sheathed in a mortar coat to help ensure long life and durability. Once this mortar is set, the sections of engineered stone -- a kind of facing -- is attached with mortar and concrete caps are placed on top of the columns.

The client selected a sandblasted wood face made from Extira, a wood composite treated to endure an amazing amount of weather and water exposure and still look good.

We'll be installing the new sign face once the stone facing is applied -- probably a week or so.

Good Signs -- Creativity Rules! (Even Home Made Signs!)

I have seen this home made sign many times in my travels downtown, and it never fails to catch my eye! I really love it -- the makes of this sign used some serious creativity and got right to the point, making this sign a real "winner" in our book!

The shape of the balloon catches my attention first, more than a boring rectangle ever could. The designer picked red and white -- super effective in capturing attention and offering high contrast!

Best of all the message is short and to the point -- GIFT BALLOONS is what you can't help but see first, and combining that message with the shape of the sign, it is hard to mistake what the business is about!

Good signage doesn't have to be expensive...or even legal, as this sign clearly doesn't meet city regulations for placement and installation method. Good signs can be made by anyone, of just about any materials.

When designing your sign, don't get lost in all the bells and whistles and excitement -- show some focus on the essential elements of good design -- like this business did -- and see the results for themselves!

Engraved Signs -- not your grandfather's engraving!

When clients talk to us about an engraved sign, they are most likely to be referring to the rather dull, pedestrian, predictable version of hard plastic with one color for the background, and another for some primitive block style lettering.

We love to visit with those clients and show them the new universe of available products for engraving! Engraving is still done with a rotary bit, but more and more often we are turning to the modern technology of laser engraving for client products.

Laser technology offers a limitless playground!! Images, text, logos... virtually any image can be converted to a style that can be reproduced with laser engraving! Not only can we etch a layer of material away to create a sign, but we can create shapes, fill areas with paint, and create crazing or etched effects on many materials.

The materials have changed, too! Not just hard plastics for engraving -- we can now work with an unlimited array of transparent materials, metals, psuedo-metals, woods, and even paper!! There are new materials available for signage and graphics all the time.

Sign-A-Rama Downtown was thrilled to attend the ground breaking of the new Preston St. facility of YouthBuild here in Louisville!

YouthBuild is a national organization that helps underserved youth learn new job skills, stay focused on their education, and give them support and encouragement to contribute to the general good of the community!

Our local chapter of YouthBuild, headed by executive director Lynn Rippy has made a major leap forward with this new facility, growing their service reach, focusing on "green" living choices and setting the stage for bigger and better things to come for Louisville's youth!

The event was most touching when the students who have been involved shared their stories and testimonials about what YouthBuild means to them -- an organization that makes postive change at that level is worths supporting!

We were thrilled to provide building banners and signs, as well as some outdoor event signs for the opening that help to tell their story.

"Green" Signage - Durability vs. Environment

It's an interesting conflict for a sign company to deal with -- the contradiction of a "green" sign.
Most of our clients come to us for a sign that will last as long as possible. They want the sign
to last as long as possible, not to degrade in exposure to the environment.

How to give clients durability, while still being "green" and not filling the landfills with junk?

There are many products available that will bridge the gaps between these seemingly conflicting desires.

CAST METAL
When signs are made of cast metal they are making a sign that will last for centuries, but they are also
making them out of a process that has very little material waste. Virtually all the metal used in the
process of casting ends up in the sign itself, and scrap is recycled into the NEXT batch of metal. It does
take a tremendous amount of energy to create a cast metal sign -- molten metal isn't easy to make -- but
for the value of the lifetime of the sign, there's nothing better and more flexible.

WOOD
Wood can be used for sign panels, and lettered by hand -- just like the "olden days". Today we have the advantage
of carved or sandblasted wood, to give dimension and interest. And paints are very durable, but will require
occasional touch up in a matter of years.

BIODEGRABLE and RECYCLED BANNER
For those who want the ease and portability of banner, there are biodegradable banner materials available now.
Also, there are companies that will take your old banner and recycle it, sewing the banner into bags and
accessories.

Most sign materials are still really "bad" for our environment -- adhesive vinyls, plastic panels and the like --
but for those that are truly committed to the cause, we can work closely with you to be sure your sign AND environment
needs are met!

New Location Signage - Ear X-tacy

Recently a Louisville business, Ear X-tacy, and iconic record/music store, decided to relocate to smaller space in Bardstown Road.

In discussions with John Timmons, the owner, he wanted visibility, but didn't have the big budget that often goes along with that.

The new Ear X-tacy location is in a pedestrian area -- tons of walking traffic -- and also has an entire facade of windows along the sidewalk -- great for display area and promotion.

We suggested some simple white vinyl logos for display in each window, as well as a sandwich board on the sidewalk to help visibility for faster moving cars. John already has some electrical signage that is just being recycled, so we felt he didn't need to invest too much in the logo display.

Ear X-tacy followed the rules of good window lettering design:
- Keep it simple
- White reads best on glass
- Repetition is key to creating something memorable

Here's a pic of one of the TWELVE windows we lettered -- will post a picture of the sandwich board and door lettering soon!

Donor Wall in Glass

Found this really impressive, muscular looking donor wall at the Women in the Arts Museum.

While simple in it's concept - heavy carved glass - the impact is dramatic and elegant.

The lettering is carved into the back of the glass surface and made dimensional with a complex cut.

The glass is green bottle tint to offer some color contrast on the white wall behind it and it is mounted with clean, smooth peg-style hardware.

Sign Made of Recycled Materials

Check out this great looking sign at an airport coffee shop. Clearly made from recycled board, the appearance of hand painted graphics gives it a feel of an old-fashioned business with hand crafted product.

The material was cut into panels, but the seams aren't disruptive to the great looks.

With our flat bed printer, it would be an interesting experiment to try to print onto a rough hewn board of this type.

Classic Sign.... And a Funny Banner!

I've admired this awesome classic sign for years... And today appeared a banner with a hilarious misspelling!

The sign itself is a great example of a 3D cabinet with exposed neon tubing. Imagine the impact it had in it's heyday during Louisville's status as a paint manufacturing capital!

Let's hope when Bridges Smith vacates that space this classic Louisville sign is preserved.

Now, I have to recognize the clever marketer who gained greater attention with that funny misspelling! Not a bad idea!!

JBS came to see us about putting their logo on the wall of their lobby, so we reviewed their budget and possible materials. There are many options to choose from, but once we have a chance to talk with our client, we usually can limit the options pretty quickly.

We suggested the clean, simple idea of the logo applied to a clear acrylic panel, attached with aluminum peg-style hardware. This "hovering panel" look has been very popular with our clients in a variety of industries.

PROJECT of the DAY - City Seal for Mayor's Gallery

We were thrilled to have the chance to work on this project for our Mayor's Gallery, where speeches, presentations and press conferences take place.

This is sandblasted foam with custom paint and specialized installation. High-density urethane foam is a wonderful, lightweight, durable product that gives the appearance of wood or metal without the expense and weight. The foam comes in a variety of thicknesses and can be used for indoor or outdoor uses.

It was important to get the seal -- a new version -- just right and the color match was also critical. The installation had to take place over an edge created by a balcony, but needed to hang at a very specific height for an appropriate view behind the Mayor.

PROJECT of the DAY - Parade Banner for Non-Profit

We donated over $10,000 in free or discounted signage to local Louisville non-profits this year through our Signs of Support pgrogram, and Interfaith Paths to Peace was one of our recipients.

They asked us to create a parade banner they could carry during their "Green Pilgrimmage" in Louisville's Olmsted Parks. We also created a sponsor board, showing all the great organizations that support inter-religious understanding through IPP. We printed a full color banner and added a pocket at the top and bottom to hold a pole for carrying and holding the banner flat and steady.

PROJECT of the DAY - Turning Sign Making Trash into Art!

Most sign companies generate yards and yards of extra adhesive vinyl and substrate every year, which frequently can end up in a land fill. We have been saving a lot of our scraps and leftovers and offering them to art programs at schools or arts organizations.

Last year we gave bunches of stuff to the Kentucky Museum of Art and Craft, a wonderful place that highlights Kentucky artists. Our kids attended summer camps there for years -- what a great place for kids and grown ups!

Julie Yoder, one of their educators, shared these photos with me of some of their kids from Tully Elementary making art from our scraps! They are cutting the vinyl like paper and creating images and pictures of all kinds. These beautiful panels will then be attached to the outside of their elementary school wall!

Here are the kids, mid-process! What smiles! We look forward to sharing more pics of the finished art project.

We worked with creative several partners to design and fabricate the display in this waiting area and conference room space.

It was important the project get done with exacting quality, so that each piece could be brought in to match what other products planned. We painted the wall graphics to ensure a perfect color match, we applied etch vinyl to the glass to coordinate and then installed a flat-cut aluminum logo to dress up the brand.

There are potential plans to expand the branding through photo displays, but the client elected to do this in phases, for budgeting purposes.

PROJECT of the DAY - Trailer Wrap

We had the chance to wrap this big trailer -- all sides!

It took the better part of the day for 2 installers, but the final look was great!

You'll see in these photos one installer, who was focused on the rivets and getting any wrinkles or bubbles out so the vinyl would hold onto the domed rivets... HUNDREDS of them.

The other installer is at the back, working with large sections of adhesive vinyl to get the graphic aligned and applied just right.

Doggone Good Graphics!! A Client Talks About His Truck Wraps

Small businesses considering investing in some car or truck graphics will want to read about Greg Braun, owner of Maid in Louisville, and how he decided to use his truck as a rolling advertisment... and how his dogs were the eye-catching feature of the design!

Here Greg answers some questions about his business decision to have graphics:

Q: Why did you decide to have your truck wrapped?

A: I knew that for a relatively low cost I could get a great attention-getting display for my vehicles. I had wanted to do this for a long time – but never got around to it. It was actually so much easier that I thought it would be – I wish I had done it years ago !

Q: You ended up with your dogs featured -- one on each of the 2 trucks -- tell us about that decision.

A: I wanted to use the dogs – Rudy was the first ( the older boxer ) – Duffy was the second ( the baby ) because I thought that they would attract attention. I wanted the dogs selfishly because as a small business owner I could use whatever ideas and themes I wanted.

Q: Have the graphics helped your business?

A: Within the first week I had a couple calls to Maid in Louisville as a result. People LOVE the dogs on the cars – and I plan to do the van this summer as well.

Q: Was it easy to get done?

A: I came back to use you because the job was so well done and the staff worked with me to design the results. All I had was the pictures that I had made….. I really didn't know how or what would work. Your staff really took charge and said "Here are a couple designs – which do you like?" .. and the second one I loved. I also came back because the results actually looked so much better that the proof – and I wouldn't trust anyone else with this job !

Q: Do you have any advice for a business owner thinking about investing in car or truck graphics?

Another Classic Louisville Sign - from a neighbor!

I grabbed this snap on my way in this morning, realizing I had overlooked this classic just a block from my office.

This is a very common style -- a box sign with neon details "wrapped" at the ends of the box and block style letters. This is unique in the tall, vertical configuration and it is in great shape, as you can see from this early morning photo!

Monument Signs - Just What You Need?

Monument signs are the workhorse of the signage business – they are made for long-term use and give a sense of gravity and permanence to a facility or neighborhood. Different styles of monument are available and can accommodate virtually any sign face material you can imagine. They can be designed to be the backdrop to something more eye-catching, or the monument can be the feature itself, drawing all the attention. They are also a preferred style of sign for many communities, making permitting easy and fast.

EXPRESSIVENESS - When considering a monument sign, you want to consider just how long you would want to have it standing. For most neighborhood entrances, having a plan for sign to last for decades or generations is reasonable. For other applications, like a business, it might be that price is a higher priority than decades of durability.

Brick or stone are very popular and one of the most durable, but we’ve even made monuments from cast iron fencing, which will probably outlast my grandkids’ grandkids! For those who want the effect of brick or stone without the price and difficulty, faux-stone is a great choice. High-density foam signage will give you great durability without the expense. In addition, in some communities if you are close to a roadway, HDU is the only permissible option, as it affords safety for drivers who might hit the sign avoiding a collision with another car.

COST EFFECTIVE - When you are designing a monument, a critical aspect is dimension. You can drastically effect the price of a sign by being creative with material use. For example, instead of the entire sign structure being made of stone, look to creating a monument with stone columns only. By being creative you can get the evocative effect of real stone but save on the overall cost.

You’d be surprised by how real-looking an HDU sign structure can be. Paint effects and carved shapes will give the effect of stone, brick, wood, or even concrete to your monument without all that expense. HDU signs install in one day, with a simple attachment of 4x4 posts in the ground. This also simplifies the permitting process, as this installation avoids conflict with any underground utilities.

Post and panel signs are also adaptable to be a ‘monument’ sign. Posts can be hidden between two sign faces and gives the designer creative freedom with the shape of the faces. Faces can be made economically and durably with alumalite or metal faces, but you can also incorporate real wood, sandblasted with the graphics, or wood-composites that can also be sandblasted.

USEFUL AND FLEXIBLE - The most industrial version of monument signs are aluminum cabinets, whether they are internally illuminated or externally illuminated. These are very common in industrial parks, where signs are very practical – designed to direct, not necessarily to advertise. They aren’t expressive, as most who are visiting are destination-bound, not ‘shopping’ for someplace to visit. They are also easy to change, so they are popular with property managers who want ease of adaptability for new tenants.

The message on a monument sign can be created with any number of materials – dimensional letters, cast metal signs, wooden or carved signs, and even lighted box sign cabinets. You can go with off-the-shelf standard HDU’s with are very, very affordable, or you can shoot the moon with stacked stone, cast metal and customized lighting.

If you are looking for something impactful, monument style signs may be just what you need. Discussions about pricing, design, materials and longevity should be the focus of your sign-maker of choice! There will almost always be a solution that fits your need perfectly!

Neon Signage - Creative and Effective Beyond Compare!

Carved Signs -- An Old Technique in Modern Day

In days of yore signs were probably exclusively made by hand, carved from wood and painted. This rudimentary technique is still being used today is the carved sign, but now is often made with sandblasting techniques as well as computer-generated 3-D carving machines. Some hand-carving is probably still happening, but more often with the carving of high-density urethane foam (HDU) which is a perfect clone to wood once painted and installed.

Carved signs are still a favorite among many who want their business to evoke an old-world quality or a sense of the unique and hand-made. A three dimensional effect, which when used properly is enchanting and welcoming to the viewer.

Since the advent of computer-driven carving tools, these signs are more affordable than ever and give the business owner unprecedented detail and material combinations to choose from.
Why would someone choose carved over newer, more modern materials? For one, the old style of signage evokes a permanence and durability. It can create a sense of hominess or hand-made quality. These are common in northeastern areas of the US, where neighborhoods will only approve more traditional methods of signage to match the architecture.

Car or Truck Lettering - Keep it Simple!

Getting your business name "out there" isn't expensive or difficult with car or truck lettering. It can be small and affordable, but impactful at the same time. Size, color and legibility are keys to a successful, useful lettering job.

The primary idea is to KEEP IT SIMPLE! Don't get carried away trying to get every possible product included. Focus on what matters in marketing -- your NAME and how to reach you! We encourage thsoe who are just looking for door lettering on each side to include the bare bones of information, laid out in this order:

NAME OF BUSINESS and LOGO
Basic description (ie 'home remodeling')

Phone number

Website

Tag Line or Catch Phrase

You might also include a logo and tagline, but that's not critical. You want your prospects to remember your name -- that repeitiion of seeing something that gets to very "sticky" to the consumer.

Colors are key -- don't be shy and be sure you are getting maximum contrast levels from the paint color. Don't use too much color, however -- I've seen signs with every line or letter in a different color in hopes of attracting attention, but the truth is its confusing and distracting to the human eye to try to differentiate all those different color vinyls and letters. Keep it simple -- just a color or two to maximize legibility.

Typical lettering projects that just cover each door and maybe the rear tailgate typically can be head for $200-400 per vehicle. Again, its not terribly expensive if you keep it simple and clean!

Things to remember:

- Lettering CAN create a permanet shadow on the paint if left on for years and years

- Over time the adhesive will get more aggressive, so remember that when you go to take it off in 10 years -- you'll need the help of a good body shop or professional vinyl removal service.

- Look for premium vinyl -- it is guaranteed and won't lift, peel or fade -- its designed just for vehicle use!

Keep your color selections simple
Too many colors or graphics will make the image hard to read and confusing to the viewer. If you look at banners as you move around the city, you'll start to notice that the promient colors are red or black on white. Yellow is also very common, combined again with either black or red.

Simplify the message
Keep the message to as few words as you can possibly muster and still make the banner do its job. For an event, as an example, the title of the event, date, time, and website are just about all you might fit so that a driver or passer-by has time to read and comprehend it. Check out the update to our webpage where we are showing more images of Classic Signs here in Louisville!

We were able to capture some images on Preston Highway, which runs North/South of the city and is nearly completely filled with retail, strip malls and office spaces. It's been developed for many years, and so there were plenty of classic signs still in good condition and being used by the business owners.

Window Graphics - Make them Work for You!

We recently finished a project for Los Monitos that we think epitomizes the power of window graphics. Of course, their location is fabulous -- facing traffic at a stop light location -- but in addition to that, they really shared their brand and message without costing themselves thousands of dollars.

To add to the impact, they painted the interior of the space a lime green, which at night lights up and floods the viewer with color and images!

The way that we helped them design these graphics was to focus the conversation on what was the MOST important message for passerbys to see. They explained that being call "Los Monitos" doesn't tell their story -- it means 'monkeys' Spanish. So our goal was to spread the message that they are teaching languages -- all kinds of them! We added "WELCOME" in multiple languages on the front door, as well as at the top of the windows where the view isn't ever obscured.

One big advantage was their logo -- that eye-catching monkey! We wanted to maximize the logo impact since it is very cute, memorable, and inviting. We used the monkey's face multiple times to reinforce the brand and hopefully draw attention to the words at the tops of the glass fronts.

The final element was creating a focal point near the front door, hence the "giant monkey" on the large glass window directly next to the door. To maximize the impact, we used "perforated vinyl" to give it a white background. This gives the black monkey a great place to "pop" but doesn't obscure the view or darken the interior space.

Again, at night, the interior is lit up from within and the green walls glow through the vine, monkey and wording to make the view impossible to miss!

Best of all, this entire project was just over $1,000, which gave them tremendous value for the impact.

Use Your Banner Effectively for Promotion

We sell lots and lots of banners to many different people and companies for many different reasons.

One of the most frequent uses is to promote an event or product on the outside of a business or location. These outdoor uses are fraught with problems for many of our clients, and as a result, banners end up hanging badly, falling down, tearing, or being blown away altogether. We've got some tips and strategies here to help you keep your banner up and looking good, while protecting your investment.

Banners are just like a sail of a boat. If wind can get behind it, it WILL pull it down. Your challenge isn't to try to overpower the wind -- your challenge is to try to prevent the wind from getting behind your banner at all, if possible.

If those banners that will be exposed to the wind -- like pole banner -- it's important to know how to fabricate them to last as long as possible.

Here are important things to know about attaching a banner firmly:

The ideal placement for a banner is on a wall or solid fence -- it allows for little or no stress on the banner, even in strong winds.

We attach banners to a wall or fence at 18" intervals. The more frequent the attachment points, the better. If all the force of the wind is focused on just a few corners, it will tear the banner without any difficutly. Using more attachment points is better. If you know you'll need lots of attachment points, when you order the banner ask for 18" or even 12" increments for grommets. You don't want to attach a banner without a grommet.

Be sure the banner is firm and taut. If you can get the banner super flat on the wall surface and attach at multiple points, the wind will not have a chance to get behind it.

On a open weave fence, like chain link, you could cut some wind slits in the face of the banner to further reduce stress. There is some debate of the value of wind slits, as some believe it contributes to tearing of a banner, ultimately.

What if you can't hang it on a wall or fence?

If your banner is going to hang freely, like a pole banner, you'll need a double layer of heavyweight banner to ensure long life. A pole pocket top and bottom helps, rather than grommets. This spreads the stress out tremendously.

Having pole pockets sewn, rather than glued, can also make for a longer term of use.

Provide some relief from wind load by using spring loaded hardware, which is readily available, or bungy-cord type of attachment on large banners. This relieves some of the load of the wind so the hardware gives, rather than the banner having to give.

In a very dangerous installation situation -- over a street or overhead of pedestrian traffic, we urge our clients to use a professional installer with experience to predict the wind load and install your banner properly. We are so wary of do-it-yourselfers that we void the warranty on our large banners unless we are providing installation services. We've experineced too many unhappy clients who hang their banner one day to find it collapsed on the ground the next.

Mesh banners are a wonderful option for super-large banners. It allows the wind to pass through easily and the edges are reinforced with nylon webbing to ensure a firm grip when installed. The downside of mesh is the color isn't nearly as vibrant as typical banner, and the mesh tends to hold dirt, providing even more discoloration as time goes on.

Free standing banners are an option for short term installations in a grassy area. We've provided clients with instructions on how to build a structure out of pvc pipe to hold their banner, with sandbags for weighting it down. We've also shown clients how to use rebar and rope and stakes to hold a banner up for a quick and easy install. Both of these are great for easy, re-usable, short term displays of promotion banners.

Banners are a great, affordable, reusable way to share your message or promotion. Knowing how to preserve your banner and install it properly for the best value is key.

Political Signs - Is Yours Effective?

Political signs proliferate at this time of year and as the yards in your community begin to bristle with the different messages, it becomes harder and harder to be sure YOUR message is getting through.

The process for creating effective signs must start at the beginning of your campaign. Your logo and message should be crafted by a professional, preferably with experience in this arena.

If you are working with someone who has less experience in political campaign design, then there are some important elements to remember during the design process so that the creation of an effective sign is easy and painless.

Consider colors - keep the number of colors involved in the logo as low as possible. Clean, bright graphics are far more effective than several, complex, detailed graphics. While red,white and blue are considered both patriotic and visually effective, don't forget variations on this theme that can work -- light blue and black, red and cream -- just a slight variation from the patriotic norm can work wonders in setting your image apart.

On Message - keep your tagline or message short and to the point, if you include one at all. It's critical for your name to be recalled, along with what seat you are running for. Of course, Obama's famous "Change" tagline is about as short as you can get. Don't be afraid to be bold and simple. Complexity is for debate and discourse, not for image.

Size Matters - Larger signs are more visible, of course, but with a simple, well crafted image, you can really stay small and still be recognizable. Maximize your campaign budget with a great design.

Learn Materials - there are a variety of materials for yard signs, which will be more or less effective depending on where and how they are used. Consult with an experienced sign company for advice before you order hundreds of a sign type that ends up costing too much or not working at all.

More is more! - Ordering higher numbers of signs saves you money in the long run -- you can order high quantities for a fraction of the price of low quantities and this overabundance of signage will help your campaign team focus on getting signs into yards. You want to be generous with your message! Get it out there!

In many ways, paying for experienced, effective design at the beginning is more important than you may realize for your campaign. Good sign companies will be able to offer you design services and expertise, as well as outside sources for these services, if necessary.

Consult closely with your sign provider to ensure you are getting the right product at the very best price.
